How dare you take your faith into your workplace?
How dare you take your faith into your workplace? This excellent question was asked earlier today on the Church@Work Facebook page. Well, to be precise, the question asked was “How dare you bring the ignorance of religion into the workplace!” Sadly I had to delete the question from the Facebook page, only because it also included further vulgar and offensive language.
But I welcomed the question and have replied to thank the man who raised this challenging point. It’s a great question for us to think about as we head for work – dare you take your faith into the workplace?
Well, in my view, it is impossible not to do so. Whether or not you believe that God created you for a purpose and that your work is part of that, whatever you believe will be expressed in the things you do – “As he thinks in his heart, so is he” as the word of God says (Proverbs 23:7).
What I do see in the working world around me is a yearning for purpose – in the life of corporations and in the working lives of people everywhere. As Christians, the challenge we have is to see our work in the context of Who we are ultimately serving: “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.” (Colossians 3:23).
